A rare pair of 19th century, classically inspired, terracotta mantelpiece busts by J M Blashfield. Beautifully depicted young children with foliage adorning their hair, stamped and dated 'J M Blashfield Stamford 1870'

John Marriott Blashfield produced terracotta sculpture, ornament and architectural items from the early part of the 1840's Starting production at Millwall, London and then in 1858 he moved to Stamford in Lincolnshire, production finishing in 1875.
Publishing a number of catalogues, including 'A Catalogue of Seven Hundred Articles, Made in Terra Cotta, and Red and Cane-Coloured Pottery' Blashfield wares are fine, crisply cast, with great attention to detail, reminiscent of the Coade factory wares.
