A rather wonderful and rare, terracotta mantlepiece model of the Winchester font, by J M Blashfield. In very good condition and stamped ' J M Blashfield No. 740'

Winchester Font:
The Tournai black marble font at Winchester Cathedral, has been in use since about 1150 AD. Its sides tell the story of St Nicholas, depicted in his bishop’s mitre and crozier, going about his kindly acts.
John Marriott Blashfield produced terracotta sculpture, ornament and architectural items from the early part of the 1840's Starting production at Millwall, London and then in 1858 he moved to Stamford in Lincolnshire, production finishing in 1875.
Publishing a number of catalogues, including 'A Catalogue of Seven Hundred Articles, Made in Terra Cotta, and Red and Cane-Coloured Pottery' Blashfield wares are fine, crisply cast, with great attention to detail, reminiscent of the Coade factory wares.
