Marble Figure Of Cupid By Benjamin Jennings 1851 ( sold )
The most beautifully carved and wonderfully decorative, marble of Cupid by Benjamin Jennings entitled ' Birth Of The Rose'.
Stamped 'B Jennings Sculptor', with obvious losses but no breaks, the whole weathered beautifully and would make a wonderful statement in any home or garden.
Benjamin Jennings junior, born in Hereford, studied sculpture in Rome, later having shop premises at King Street and Victoria Street in Hereford. He exhibited this figure of Cupid at the Great Exhibition, London in 1851 where it won a first prize for sculpture. Being only thirty two years of age at this point, the Royal Academy hailed him as having a very bright future, unfortunately he died young, at the age of only forty.
The last image is taken from Volume IV of the photographic records of the ' Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations 1851' known as the Great Exhibition, held in the Royal Collection and is of this figure in its original state, the photograph taken by Claude-Marie Ferrier (1811-89)
