A large and rare pair of 19th century terracotta planters by renowned maker J M Blashfield. With ribbon lattice design running around all four sides, reeded top edge and both stamped 'Blashfield Patent Pottery No.242' Both in good condition, with no cracks, some nibbles and chips around the bottom edges, but only as you would expect from 170 years of use in the garden.

John Marriott Blashfield produced terracotta sculpture, ornament and architectural items from the early part of the 1840's Starting production at Millwall, London and then in 1858 he moved to Stamford in Lincolnshire, production finishing in 1875.
Publishing a number of catalogues, including 'A Catalogue of Seven Hundred Articles, Made in Terra Cotta, and Red and Cane-Coloured Pottery' Blashfield wares are fine, crisply cast, with great attention to detail, reminiscent of the Coade factory wares.
