Pair Of Large Early 19th Century Terracotta Pineapple Finials ( sold )
A fine pair of large scale, early 19th century buff terracotta pineapple finials. Both the fruit and slip, boldly and yet finely cast, standing on a simple socle, the whole with traces of old paint, some nibbles and small losses.
Pineapples used decoratively and architecturally in the 18th and 19th centuries, were a show of hospitality, wealth and prestige.
I cannot find a comparable design to this pair of finials, but the fine casting, bold fruit, the composition of the terracotta all point to be produced by either Coade, Blanchard or Blashfield.
English circa 1830
