Very Large John Mathews Royal Pottery Terracotta Pot ( sold )
A very large, 19th century terracotta garden pot by John Mathews, Royal Pottery, Weston Super Mare. In excellent condition. beautifully weathered and fully stamped, the biggest and best that I have had.
Weston Pottery was born from two terracotta brick and tile manufacturers, owned by Charles Phillips and John Harvey merging in 1847. It was at this point that they began to produce garden ornaments and flowerpots and exhibited their wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851. They gained recognition for their work, counting Kew Gardens and The Royal Parks as prominent customers. Phillips retired in 1871 and was succeeded by John Mathews, who ran the company for eighteen years until his retirement.
