Large Pair Of 19th Century John Mathews Royal Pottery Terracotta Pots ( sold )
A wonderful and rare pair of large 19th century terracotta plant pots by John Mathews, Royal Pottery, Weston Super Mare. Both in wonderful condition and beautifully weathered.
Weston Pottery was born from two terracotta brick and tile manufacturers, owned by Charles Phillips and John Harvey merging in 1847. It was at this point that they began to produce garden ornaments and flowerpots and exhibited their wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851. They gained recognition for their work, counting Kew Gardens and The Royal Parks as prominent customers. Phillips retired in 1871 and was succeeded by John Mathews, who ran the company for eighteen years until his retirement.
