A well executed, Neo classical carved marble figure of William Wordsworth attributed to John Francis, weathered, with some staining and a couple of old repairs.
This figure is unsigned but directly correlates in form and execution to two marble figures discovered in a Spanish collection in 2012, one of the the Duke Of Sutherland and one depicting the sculptor himself.
John Francis
John Francis worked first under Samuel Joseph and then under Francis Chantrey, coming to the attention of the Duke of Sussex who commissioned small, cabinet-sized busts of his own family and many of his political associates. He became a favourite artist of William IV, and then of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Francis exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy from 1820 until 1857.
